In a story that sounds straight out of a comic book, a Charizard-shaped Cheeto recently sold at Goldin Auction House for an astonishing $87,840. The news made a national headline by the Associated Press who detailed the brief history of the item as well as its final sale price. According to their report, the auction received 60 bids and the final price was $72,000 with a buyer’s premium attached.

The description for the auction, which is still available on Goldin’s website, reads, “Presented is a 3-inch long Flamin’ Hot Cheeto in the shape of the Pokémon Charizard, affixed to a customized Pokémon card and encapsulated in a clear card storage box. It was initially discovered and preserved sometime between 2018-2022 by 1st & Goal Collectibles. The Cheeto surged in popularity on social media platforms in late 2024.”

It’s kind of mad to learn that people are willing to part with so much cash just to get a novelty item, but then this is really no different from people seeing Jesus in a Cheeto or Mother Mary in their soup. The hope that something bigger lies beyond this world is one of the driving forces for all of humanity and while a Cheeto Charizard is hardly proof of the almighty, it does make you believe something is out there.
