Fans of Pokémon and Wallace and Gromit have reason to rejoice today. In an exciting announcement from The Pokémon Company, it has been revealed that a new “special project” between TPC and Aardman is currently in the works for a potential release date of 2027. As TPC’s international website reads, “The collaboration will see Aardman bringing their unique style of storytelling to the Pokémon universe in brand-new adventures.”

Gassing up the project further, TPC’s VP of marketing and media, Taito Okiura, stated, “This is a dream partnership for Pokémon. Aardman are masters of their craft, and we have been blown away by their talent and creativity. What we have been working on together ensures our global Pokémon fans are in for a treat!” That sounds incredibly exciting, especially if you’re a fan of Aardman’s previous work.

So who is Aardman?

While the studio may not be a household name in the United States, over in the UK, Aardman has been one of the premiere animation studios since the year 2000. It burst onto the scene with 2000’s Chicken Run as its first feature film, but it has been responsible for the Wallace and Gromit series since the late ’80s (which originally started as short films). The history of the company dates back to the ’70s when it provided animation for a number of BBC series and was even involved with the UK’s Channel 4 network.

Just from that history, I would expect that this upcoming Pokémon project will be stop-motion claymation. It might take on a modern form where it’s actually all 3D and modeled to look like clay, but at any rate, it should have the signature mark of quality that all of Aardman’s projects have.
