The moment everyone’s been waiting for is nearly here! The release of the Sonic the Hedgehog 3 movie is less than two weeks away, and the anticipation is at an all-time high. Among all the hype, perhaps the largest draw is seeing the fan-favorite Shadow make his film debut. Considering that Keanu Reeves, the voice of Shadow in the movie, has been putting in work to create a fan-faithful depiction of the character, it’s near certain that that excitement is justified. To many, Keanu Reeves seems like the perfect choice for the role, and not just to the fans, but to the director behind the movie as well.
In a recent issue of SFX Magazine, the director of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Jeff Fowler, touched on how Reeves was chosen for the role. In a surprise turn of events, Fowler revealed that one of the main selling points was his performance in the John Wick films.
“I’d be lying if I didn’t say there was just an obvious corollary between his performance in the John Wick films and the vibe we’re trying to channel for Shadow. Because Shadow, from a tonal standpoint, is an anti-hero, he’s got a little edginess to him. It felt like the perfect fit for Keanu. He gave such a great performance. He knew what we were after, and was excited about playing the character and coming into our world.”
When looking at it from that lens, it makes perfect sense. When it was first revealed that Shadow would be featured in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, many fans predicted Keanu Reeves would be the best fit to voice him. Given how much Reeves has taken to the role, it seems like even he himself would agree that it was a perfect match.
By the end of next week, Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will finally be out. The film is set to air on December 20th, so tickets will likely become available at theaters very soon. We get the feeling you won’t want to miss out on this latest and greatest adventure from Sonic and his friends, so be sure to mark your calendars for next Friday!
