While video game movies have been around for a long time, the past few years have been a golden age for them. Not only has there been a diverse array of games getting their own films, but they’ve been going over remarkably well among fans too. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is perhaps the biggest success story so far, making $1.3 billion at the box office and taking the world by storm. With how well it was received, it was no surprise when they announced that a sequel was in the works, which fans have been eagerly waiting for ever since. While no new official news has been put out, Keegan-Michael Key, the voice of Toad, had some interesting tidbits to mention in a recent interview with Men’s Journal:
“I feel like what they’ve done creatively is they’ve really widened out the universe that these characters live in and we’re going to meet some new folks. We’re going to meet some new folks that are old favorites and some folks that I think are really deep cuts, but because of the way the story’s laying itself out right now, those characters are going to be very intriguing.”
Unsurprisingly, this comment by Key has stirred the imagination of fans across the world. The first movie was notorious for featuring a massive amount of easter eggs and nods for keen-eyed viewers, so the idea of “deep cut” characters being included in the sequel is very exciting. While we have no way to know who he is referring to, speculation abounds. Many suspect they will be more well-known characters like Daisy or Waluigi, but others are confident that, given the attention to detail of the original, they’ll be truly surprising picks.

Regardless of who these deep cut characters end up being or what other fun easter eggs await, the excitement among the fanbase only grows as time goes on. The sequel is set to release on April 3rd, 2026, which while still a ways away, is getting closer with each passing day. We certainly hope the movie lives up to the original, and from what it sounds like right now it certainly will!
