Japanese game developer and publisher Square Enix just broke some major news to its investors with the announcement of an extraordinary loss of ¥22.1 billion (approx. $140,343,309) in content abandonment for the fiscal year ending March 2024.
The company went onto specify that it has revised its development pipeline of HD games (i.e. console titles) to be more selective and focused with development resources. This presumably means various titles that were in development have been cancelled. This follows comments from company president Takashi Kiryu back in February where he also indicated the company would rely less on outsourcing and focus on large-scale games.
To many on the outside looking in this isn’t too surprising – Square Enix has seen numerous underwhelming releases in recent years, such as the competitive Foamstars, the PlatinumGames developed Babylon’s Fall, and the open-world Forspoken.
We’ll just have to wait and see how this shift to focus on bigger games could effect the Nintendo Switch and its eventual successor.
