Yesterday was incredibly eventful for fans of the Sonic the Hedgehog films. Not only did director Jeff Fowler confirm that filming had finished for the third movie, but the Knuckles Paramount+ TV series got a new poster. That’s not normally a call for celebration, but there is something nifty here. Knuckles is wearing a cowboy hat, an obvious reference to the old animated Sonic film.

Released in Japan in 1996 as two separate OVAs before getting combined in an English dub in 1999, Sonic The Hedgehog The Movie was a fairly competent-looking production for the period. Given the extended budget that OVAs offered, it had smooth animation and interesting character designs. One of those designs was Knuckles wearing a cowboy hat. I can’t quite recall why that was the case, but it’s fun nonetheless.
Whatever the Knuckles series winds up being, there are sure to be references to past Sonic media throughout. That should help ingratiate it with fans.
