Back when I was growing up, the Nintendo 64 and the PlayStation were at each other’s throats. In one corner, you had Super Mario 64, a first-of-its-kind 3D platformer that had to be seen to be believed; and in the other corner, Crash Bandicoot charmed players as a marsupial with attitude.
Back then, no one ever dreamed the two characters would ever grace the same console, let alone the same game. While Crash made his way to Nintendo consoles as early as 2001 in Crash Bandicoot: Rise of Cotex on the GameCube, the two have yet to properly share a title… until now! (Sort of.)
YouTuber ToastedShoes (who has been known to dabble about with game mods on his channel), along with modders CrashCrosAppleSauce, Snoc, and Junior, have successfully put together full-fledged Super Mario expansion for Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time — and the results are much more impressive than you would imagine. Crash wasn’t simply swapped out with a Mario model, and it’s obvious that a lot of work went into the project. Instead, loads of assets were recreated, including enemies and coins — Wario even makes an appearance. Now we just need to see Mario and Crash come together for real!
