While SNK is perhaps best known for its many fighting game franchises, the side-scrolling shooter Metal Slug is regarded as a classic franchise in its own right. Despite this, the last mainline game was released way back in 2008 for the Nintendo DS – Metal Slug 7. That may soon be changing, however, as the publisher has revealed that a new game is in the works.

According to SNK chairman Ge Zhihui , via Gematsu, the new game will be “for console” and is separate from the mobile Metal Slug in development at Tencent. While a specific platform isn’t named, SNK has brought many of its games to the Switch in recent years, and during the same press conference Zhihui also confirms that SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy, which was heavily marketed for Switch ahead of its September 2018 launch, has passed the 300,000 units sold mark. Here’s hoping this is all a good sign for the upcoming Metal Slug heading Nintendo’s way!
