While Digimon hasn’t had enduring success in the west, Japan has been enjoying new anime, games and toys ever since its inception. The latest incarnation of the franchise is “Appli Monsters”, which takes a more modern approach in that the Digimon are now themed around smartphone apps.

Bandai Namco has announced two Appli Monsters games will be heading to the 3DS in Japan. The first will be released this fall on the eShop, and is subtitled “Cyber Arena”. Players scan QR codes to get monsters to fight with. The next game is given the title “Digimon Universe: Appli Monsters” and will be “a grand adventure”.

You can see what Cyber Arena will look like at the 3 minute mark in the video below:

Now the question is whether or not the west will see this new take on the Digimon franchise. Many games have been released in Japan over the years, but very few have been localized. However, earlier this year we saw the PS4 and Vita western release of Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, so it shouldn’t be totally ruled out.

We’ll be sure to bring you more information as it comes in!
