The Kunio-Kun series is recognized as an enduring classic in Japan, and while the franchise has never had quite the same level of popularity in the West we’ve gotten a few entries localized, like River City Ransom and Super Dodge Ball.
Thankfully we’ll soon be able to return to River City, as Natsume is bringing the 2013 3DS game Nekketsu Kouha Kunio-Kun SP: Rantou Kyousoukyoku westward for the franchise’s 30th Anniversary, albeit with the much punchier title River City: Tokyo Rumble.

While recent games in the franchise have been sports-based affairs, River City: Tokyo Rumble returns to the RPG-meets-brawler gameplay of River City Ransom. You’ll punch your way through the streets of Tokyo, occasionally chatting to non-hostile residents and visiting various stores to learn new skills and heal up. The game also has a striking style, with the classic NES sprites running around fully polygonal environments.
Multiplayer minigames will also be included, such as a 4-player rumble mode and, of course, dodgeball. Local play and download play will be supported.
Natsume will be revealing more on River City: Tokyo Rumble at E3.
