It is interesting to see Nintendo respond so quickly to these reports. Only time will tell what fate the Wii U has in store.
Nintendo may soon be making some big changes, as the Nikkei, Japan’s largest financial newspaper, is reporting that the company will cease production of the Wii U within the year.

Just to clarify: The Nikkei doesn’t rule out that Nintendo will sell NX this year. They are also confirming it will be unveiled though.
