Last week’s news that the Western release of Fire Emblem Fates would not include a controversial unit “petting” feature had fans up in arms. Now it’s been revealed what will be replacing Fates’ so-called “skinship” option in the West, and it isn’t all that different.
A video uploaded yesterday by Polygon shows the player entering the game’s “Private Quarters” location and inviting ally character Sakura, at which point a Live2D model appears and full voice acting is heard.
Where the English version of this feature differs from the original Japanese release’s is the lack of any sort of physical interaction with the character– no touching of the invited unit with the stylus is allowed whatsoever.
After news of the skinship feature’s removal broke, numerous members of the Fire Emblem fan community voiced their discontent over perceived censorship and a lack of communication from Nintendo regarding what, if anything, would be added in its place.

Fire Emblem Fates is set to be released in North America on February 19th.
