Arguably one of the most influential people in the gaming industry not only today, but in all of video gaming history, Shigeru Miyamoto has been a key player in the creation of some of Nintendo’s biggest and most popular franchises. Super Mario Bros., The Legend of Zelda, Donkey Kong, Star Fox, F-Zero, Pikmin– they all owe their lives to him. And the list goes on! If you’ve got a favorite game of Nintendo’s, chances are Miyamoto helped in its creation.

He’s undoubtedly become one of the faces synonymous with Nintendo as a company, and though we all know his retirement is inevitable at some point, none of us want to think about it. We have no idea where the company will go without him, so here’s to hoping that when he finally does decide to leave, he passes on all his invaluable knowledge to those still in the company.

But we’re not here to talk about Miyamoto leaving Nintendo, because it’s way too sad to think about. We’re here to celebrate Miyamoto. Sixty three years ago, today, he was given to us.

With all the amazing content he’s given to us in just the past year (Mario Kart 8, Super Smash Bros. 3DS/Wii U, Majora’s Mask 3D, Splatoon, Super Mario Maker, Tri-Force Heroes) and so much more awesome coming, namely Star Fox Zero and Zelda U, I think we first owe Miyamoto’s parents a hearty thank you. And then, more importantly, a big thank you to the man himself for making us all happier than we ever thought we could be.

And lastly, of course, a big happy birthday. We hope you have a great day, Miyamoto, and here’s to another fantastic year!
