Pokkén Tournament, The Pokémon Company’s answer to Tekken, had a couple more fighters added to its roster today. During a livestream from Japanese streaming site Niconico, we got our first look at Weavile, a fourth generation Pokémon, and the renowned Charizard in action.
For the uninitiated, Weavile is a feathered weasel-like Pokémon that made his video game debut in Pokémon Diamond and Pearl on the Nintendo DS. In Pokkén Tournament, he appears to be a low, nimble fighter that uses dashes, dives and psychic claw attacks to shred his opponents. He certainly looks like a force to be reckoned with.
There’s not much I can, or need, to tell you about Charizard. He was probably an obvious inclusion in the game, but it’s great to see him portrayed with the level of detail and animation that Pokkén Tournament offers its fighters. His debut footage shows a constant barrage of flame-infused slashes, tail-whips and roars… and then we see his mega evolution.
So when can we get our hands on Pokkén Tournament and it’s ever-growing roster of iconic contenders? Well, unless you live in or are planning a visit to Japan, it might be awhile. As of now, Pokkén Tournament is coming exclusively to Japanese arcades on July 16th. It has been long rumored (or, more accurately, long hoped for) that we might see a Wii U version of the game. Unfortunately, there has been no official word from developer Bandai Namco or The Pokémon Company about a console release.
