One of the first mechanics the player learns about in Pokémon Pokopia is the ability to give food to other Pokémon as gifts. While many players simply keep a stock of Leppa Berries on hand as a good universal gift, there’s actually more to it than simply handing over whatever edible fruit you happen to have. Each food item in Pokopia has an assigned flavor profile, and what flavor a given Pokémon prefers will determine how much they enjoy what they’re given. Keeping flavors in mind is very important for maximizing a Pokémon’s comfort level, so keep on reading to learn more! Special thanks to Serebii for documenting all of the flavor information for the various food items found in the game.

There are six possible flavors that each food item can have, and these influence how much friendship and comfort a Pokémon gains when they eat it. These flavors include spicy, sour, sweet, bitter, dry, and flavorless. The flavor any given Pokémon prefers will be listed on their Pokédex page, so be sure to check that first to know what is best to give them. Flavorless foods will simply earn a neutral response from any Pokémon that eats them, so these aren’t really ever worth giving as gifts unless the Pokémon specifically asks for them as part of a request. Below is a list of each flavor and what food items fall under that category:

Spicy

  • Fresh Carrot
  • Chili Sauce
  • Carrot Bread
  • Bread Bowl
  • Healthy Soup
  • Crouton Salad
  • Electrifying Soup

  • Curry and Rice

As can be seen, there’s quite a variety of options available for each of the flavors, mostly thanks to the wide array of cooking recipes. For the sake of giving gifts, the crops are the way to go, as it’s easy to grow a healthy supply of each of them to cover most of the flavor profiles available. Spicy is probably the most difficult one since there is no easily renewable vegetable or berry available, but Fresh Carrots are fairly common so long as you don’t eat them all. Next time a Pokémon asks for something to eat, just check their Pokédex entry for their preferred flavor and find the easiest option available to make the most of the flavor mechanic in Pokopia!
