It’s finally happened, after all these months of eagerly waiting, the Nintendo Switch 2 is finally available! Perhaps the first thing many are doing as soon as they pick up their shiny new Switch 2 is trying out Mario Kart World, which was released alongside the console. It’s been over eight years since the last Mario Kart title was released, so there’s been a massive jump in scope for this game. With a total of 50 characters making up the roster, there’s quite a few that need to be unlocked too. Fortunately, doing so is a relatively straightforward task.
Out of the full roster, just over half of them are available right from the start as of the day-one update. That still leaves a whopping 24 characters to unlock, and the criteria for doing so consists of two categories. The first are the six main characters which are unlocked by completing the Grand Prix mode in various cups:
- Birdo: Clear the Banana Cup
- Bowser Jr.: Clear the Lightning Cup
- Daisy: Clear the Flower Cup
- Donkey Kong: Clear the Mushroom Cup
- Lakitu: Clear the Shell Cup
- Rosalina: Clear the Star Cup
That still leaves 18 characters unaccounted for however, so what’s the plan for them? The answer lies in the new Kamek item, which when picked up by any participant in a race will transform all of the racers into a random character. After this is done, said character is permanently unlocked and added to the roster. The full list of characters unlocked via this method is as follows:
- Cheep Cheep
- Coin Coffer
- Conkdor
- Cow
- Dolphin
- Fish Bone
- Monty Mole
- Para-Biddybud
- Peepa
- Penguin
- Pianta
- Pokey
- Rocky Wrench
- Sidestepper
- Snowman
- Spike
- Stingby
- Swoop
While a bit reliant on getting lucky, it should be relatively simple to try and fill up the full roster just by playing lots of races. Fortunately, that won’t be a hard task for many, as there’s so much to be done in this game in a way that Mario Kart has never seen before. Best of luck in finding all of these characters, and happy racing!
