Last night, Pokémon aired an ad during Super Bowl LX, centered around a new campaign titled “What’s Your Favorite?” They enlisted several celebrities in the minute-long ad that was teased on social media prior to the big game.
However, fans are disappointed that Pokémon didn’t use this time to showcase any current or new releases, and that there was no big announcement. With Super Bowl ads costing brands millions, fans expected more.
For Super Bowl LX, brands paid anywhere from $8 to $10 million for a 30 second spot. “What’s Your Favorite” ran for one minute, meaning The Pokémon Company spent upwards of $16 million. To put it into perspective, Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s budget was around $13 million. This is without accounting for appearance fees from Lady Gaga, Trevor Noah, Jisoo, Charles Leclerc, Lamine Yamal, Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, and Young Miko.
While fans may have been disappointed, Pokémon aired a Super Bowl ad 10 years ago at Super Bowl L that also ran for a minute and didn’t reveal any new information. This commercial was for Pokémon 20’s celebration, and we had these same complaints.
Personally, I really enjoyed the commercial and knew that no new information would likely be revealed. With Pokémon Day less than three weeks away, all major reveals are going to be kept secret until then. What I think people should remember is that Super Bowl spots are to bring eyes back to the brand from those who aren’t as into Pokémon as hardcore fans. With the 30th anniversary looming, they want to target new and old fans and bring that nostalgia factor with this new campaign.
What do you think? Did you enjoy the ad or did you think something else would’ve been better? And the most important question: Which Pokémon is your favorite?
