Just a short while ago Sega held a panel at SXSW focusing on the history and future of Sonic the Hedgehog. Most of it was a look back, peppered with brief question and answer sessions featuring creator Yuji Naka, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka, and the voice actors for both Sonic and Eggman.

A few interesting tidbits came out of the panel however, such as a release date finally being set for Sonic Boom: Fire and Ice on the 3DS; September 27th. We also got confirmation that the Wii U version of Mario & Sonic at the Rio Olympic Games will be hitting store shelves in June.

The final big reveal was the announcement of a 25th anniversary party for the blue hedgehog, which will be held in San Diego this July. You can check out the full details and buy tickets here.

No details were given about what to expect, but the host of the panel strongly suggested we’ll see a new game reveal. Stay tuned for more news if it ends up heading to Nintendo systems!
