According to a report by Destructoid, the long-dormant sequel to Beyond Good and Evil may finally be back on the development track, with Nintendo sharing the bill. The rumor comes from two seemingly unrelated sources, one of whom is identified as Alexander Maier, the editor from Dual Pixels who, just last week, shared a list of supposed NX features on behalf of established informant Geno.

Beyond Good and Evil 2 was formally announced in May of 2008 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and, from a public perspective, has been in development limbo ever since. In a situation similar to that of last year’s Bayonetta 2, this new rumor claims that Nintendo has stepped up as a financial partner to help get the game finished, in exchange for NX exclusivity. Legendary french developer Michel Ancel of Ubisoft Montpellier, speaking to Eurogamer about a month ago, confirmed that the project was still in some state of active development.

BeyondGoodEvil2

The original Beyond Good and Evil was a stealth action-adventure puzzle game released for PlayStation 2, Xbox and PC in 2003. Critics widely praised the game for its creative storytelling, smooth animation and endearing characters. Those who played the game seemed to unanimously adore it; unfortunately, it sold poorly and was ultimately a commercial failure. This left most fans doubting that a sequel would ever happen.

Nintendo has proven in a variety of ways, recently, that it isn’t afraid to pony up some money to generate goodwill with gamers. If this rumor does turn out to be true, it could mean another beloved franchise spared from development purgatory and an epic addition to the NX library.
