Back in 2014 we first heard that Sega was collaborating with Sony on a Sonic the Hedgehog movie, and after a long period of silence we’ve heard more about the project. In an interview with The Worldfolio, President and CEO of the Sega Sammy Group dropped the news of a 2018 release date. Check out the quote:

“Sega Sammy Group is currently planning with Sony Pictures to create a live-action and animation hybrid “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie scheduled for release in 2018. Like with this CG animation production, we would like to expand our business into other entertainment areas beyond what we are currently involved.”

Back when the movie was first announced we learned that it will have the same producer as the Fast & Furious franchise; Neal Moritz, who also worked on 21 Jump Street, Goosebumps and many more. We were also told that the animation would be being handled by Marza Animation Planet, which is a division of Sega Sammy responsible for the CG openings of many of its games, including the last few Japan-developed Sonic titles. Interestingly, they also created the high resolution models featured in the Splatoon and Mario Kart 8 promotional materials.

The question right now is which Sonic design will we see, and what stories could be covered? We’ll be sure to keep you informed of any future developments!
