Ever since receiving Mew in Pokémon Red Version from a Toys “R” Us event I’ve loved heading out and picking up Mythical and Legendary giveaways, and that hasn’t changed one bit. Available now at McDonald’s is Hoopa, the 720th Pokémon and the first dual type Psychic/Ghost Pokémon at that. Receiving Hoopa is as easy as heading to a local McDonald’s with a copy of Pokémon X, Y, Omega Ruby, or Alpha Sapphire and receiving it as a Mystery Gift via wireless communication. For such a unique and rare Pokémon it’s definitely worth the trip!

Hoopa’s typing isn’t the only thing one of a kind about it, though. When downloaded it will be level 50 and in its Confined forme, appearing as a small but tricky imp able to reach through space and teleport. This shows in its signature move Hyperspace Hole, an attack unaffected by accuracy or evasion changes that also bypasses any kind of blocking move like Protect. It also holds the rare Magician ability, able to steal items from the Pokémon it attacks. The rest of its move set is filled out by Astonish, Psychic, and Nasty Plot. The last in particular is great for a natural special attacker like Hoopa, allowing it to double the stat and really cause some mischief!

If you have Hoopa in Pokémon Omega Ruby or Alpha Sapphire you can unlock its darker side. By visiting a Poké Mart with Hoopa in your party in ORAS you will be gifted with the mysterious Prison Bottle, an ancient relic said to have sealed the power of a certain Pokémon long ago. When shown this item Hoopa’s djinn-like Unbound forme will arrive, lasting for three days or until placed in the PC. Its Ghost type changes to Dark and nearly all of its stats increase, making for an especially powerful mixed attacker. When leveled it will learn Hyperspace Rush, an even more powerful attack exclusive to Hoopa Unbound that lowers its opponents defense, making each attack after more and more powerful!

As such a unique Pokémon, Hoopa’s definitely worth the trip to download. Whether you’re after a complete Pokédex, love one-of-a-kind Pokémon, or think the best defense is a good offense then you have until December 23rd to receive it from a participating McDonald’s near you.
