Fans of the overly-charming and surprisingly-fun Animal Crossing series have become used to a pattern in their releases. With a release of a core game in the series for every major handheld and console since the DS, it’s understandable fans are expecting a proper Animal Crossing title on the Wii U, and I think we’re all in agreement that amiibo Festival just doesn’t cut it.
Unfortunately, it’s been three years since the Wii U’s release and there’s still no sign of a major Animal Crossing game in sight. This is more than a little confusing, and we can’t help but wonder if maybe they’re planning something big for the future, but mostly we’re just sad.
The good people over at TheBitBlock, a YouTube channel dedicated to Nintendo coverage, have created something in an attempt to to curb that sadness. Or worsen it, depending on how you look at it. Either way, though, what they’ve done is incredible, and we thought it was worth showing off. Please keep in mind that none of what we’re about to talk about is from a real Nintendo product; it’s all just wishful thinking. This is not a real game, no matter how much we all wish it were.
In his new series dubbed “Make Believe,” the host Josh Thomas imagines what Nintendo’s future could hold. The first episode, of course, features Animal Crossing’s potential on the Wii U. I won’t go into all the details he talks about here, because it’s better if you just watch (and much more worthwhile), so I highly encourage you to do so.
However, we do want to touch briefly on some things he discusses in the video. Josh addresses a lot, but most notably he talks about features for the game that fans have been asking for in the series for years. I personally took note of the toolbox, which may be the most needed item in the series (though personally, I would have made it a separate inventory space entirely, like the envelope space).
Josh also talks about some mechanics and features that I never knew I wanted. I can only speak for myself, but I never really thought about camera control outdoors in the series. But lo and behold it makes everything look fantastic. And I had no idea that I ever wanted sticker sheets in Animal Crossing, but I can tell you now that if they’re not in the next game, I’m going to be much more upset than I should be.
I want to remind you again that none of this real, but I’d still highly suggest you take the nine minutes out of your day to watch this video. It’s beautifully illustrated and animated, and it’s worth every second. Take a look and let us know what else you think would be good in the next Animal Crossing game!
