When you think about it for more than a few seconds, Mario Kart races are downright terrifying. Competitors are tossing shells, bananas, bullets and more in an effort to make other racers crash. The courses are peppered with obstacles that would likely kill a mortal man. The chances of falling in lava, or simply to one’s death, are not so much a fear as they are a inevitability.

Nothing displays this dread greater than new footage of Mario Kart Arcade GP VR, which will hit arcades in Japan soon. Providing a first-person VR view of the bloodbath for the first time, the footage shows what the player can expect to see as they drive around the racetracks — hurling objects at opponents, snatching items from balloons, and encountering Thwomps five times the size of your racer. While the game is beautifully rendered and popping with color, it’s but a distraction from the carnage taking place. The short trailer ends with a nearby Piranha Plant lunging towards the player, who is undoubtedly about to become familiar with the plant’s innards. One can only imagine the terror.

No word on whether the game will ever hit western arcades, but if it ever does then we’ll all be there to lay witness to the bloodsport firsthand.
