UK gaming magazine EDGE recently had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Zelda producer Eiji Aonuma about the eagerly anticipated the Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Things didn’t just stop there, however, as the magazine asked what is next up for the illustrious designer. This was his response:

“Actually, Nintendo has been telling me to create a new IP. But then, they’re also telling me to make more Zelda games. I can’t really share much; I’m not sure I’m allowed to say anything. But I really like the idea of a game where I can live as a thief. That’s all I’ll say.”

It sounds like Nintendo isn’t quite sure what to do next, as Aonuma and his team are likely hard at work on Breath of the Wild ahead of its March 2017 launch, but it’s still exciting knowing they’ve started to plan ahead. While many Zelda fans would no doubt love to see more games developed under his leadership, it’s also undeniably exciting to think of a brand new IP coming from such pedigree. A focus on a playable thief would be a far cry from the noble hero that is Link too, so long as you ignore the latter’s blatant disregard for household pottery.

We’ll be sure to bring you more news on Aonuma’s future projects as and when it comes in.
