In a statement I can’t quite understand, a former Rockstar dev said he believes Grand Theft Auto VI on Nintendo Switch 2 wouldn’t make sense as something Rockstar would pursue. Speaking to YouTube channel Kiwi Talkz, former open-world designer Jérémy Hartvick told the channel that he feels Rockstar wouldn’t want to risk “delivering a subpar experience” when it came to its flagship series, which apparently would happen on Switch 2.
“I don’t believe it even makes sense,” Hartvick said. “I’m not sure the audience for GTA 6 is so much the audience of the Switch. If you’re a GTA fan, you will probably buy the console on which GTA comes out, or you’ll get it for PC if it comes to PC, etc. I’m wondering if it really makes sense, especially when you have a killer app. You know that people will buy a console for your game. Does it make sense for you to go out of your way to probably have the risk of delivering a subpar experience because it does not run exactly the same and so on while you know that anybody will buy a PS5 to get your game?”
Kiwi Talkz brought up the current global economic situation with its inflated prices, to which Hartvick admitted it wouldn’t be “totally ludicrous” for Rockstar to port GTA VI to Switch 2. Still, he doesn’t believe the company would currently go that route, instead suggesting a streaming option would be the best fit for the platform. I suppose he’s considering things from a technical angle, but that seems a little silly given how the Switch 2 is comparable to an Xbox Series S when games are optimized correctly.
I also have to point out the “subpar experience” thing, which seems hilarious in a reality where Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition exists. That compilation was an absolute mess on every platform when it released in 2021, and to my knowledge, the Switch port has never been “fixed.” That wasn’t developed internally by Rockstar, but considering the company had to approve of its quality for release, it was seemingly okay with letting three of its most defining games be butchered beyond reason for a quick buck.
I won’t say that Grand Theft Auto VI is coming to Switch 2 anytime soon, but Rockstar is certainly not going to ignore the success of Nintendo’s platform over concerns of quality.
