The newly released Resident Evil movie has pulled in impressive figures over its opening weekend, topping all seven of the franchise live-action films before it and marking a personal record for director Zach Cregger.
Deadline reported that the horror reboot opened to $108.3 million worldwide, meaning it has already surpassed the full run of the two previous opening films in the franchise — 2002’s Resident Evil ($102.9 million) and 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City ($41.9M).
2016’s Resident Evil: The Final Chapter stands as the highest-grossing title with $312 million, but Cregger’s installment could soon top this and become the most successful film in the series.
Resident Evil is also Cregger‘s biggest success so far, exceeding the $70 million brought in by his previous horror flick, last year’s Weapons.
The film takes place over a single night across Raccoon City, following medical courier Bryan as he transports an important package to the monster-infested city’s hospital.
Resident Evil is available in theaters now. It is co-written by Zach Cregger and Shay Hatten, and stars Austin Abrams, Zach Cherry, Kali Reis, Paul Walter Hauser, and Jonno Wilson.
