Nintendo hasn’t forgotten about its Star Fox remake just yet. Launched earlier this year to solid reviews, the most criticized aspect of the package was that the included multiplayer offering was a bit threadbare. Well, Nintendo is about to expand on the competitive offerings with a free update. Scheduled to hit the eShop on September 28th, 2026, players will be able to wage war against each other on three new stages which introduce different objectives.
On Katina, players will fight for control of a laser that then targets the enemy base for destruction. In Sector X, teams will wage war against asteroids while avoiding energy blasts and dueling with the opposing team. Lastly, on Venom, both teams will battle to control data modules, but will need to pull back from them as they randomly let out bursts of energy. I’m still not sure why you can mix and match these modes with different levels, but at least the game has more than a handful of stuff to do online.
The bigger addition here is split-screen support, which Star Fox curiously lacked before. Not only can four players take part in classic battles like in the N64 game, but you can similarly go online with up to four players on one console now. The frame rate gets halved to 30 fps, but otherwise this means you won’t need to find random players to fill out your team. It honestly reminds me of the classic days of the Xbox 360, and I’m surprised more games don’t offer this feature.
