After its reveal last night during Sony’s “State of Play” presentation, VGC posted an interview with Rayman Legends Retold tech director Thibaut Assandri that gives us reason to believe the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 port will be rather excellent. Along with confirming it will run at 60 fps and even include ray-tracing, Assandri said, “Essentially, on Switch 2, we are quite on par with the Xbox Series S [version in terms of] quality.”
While most of the interview is about when Ubisoft learned of the Switch 2’s existence and how development of Legends Retold pivoted to include the console, it seems Ubisoft’s other studios already familiar with Nintendo’s console were able to help get Legends Retold working rather quickly. Assandri explains, “The team in Germany were already aware of [Switch 2] and were already working on the [ Star Wars Outlaws] port so they were much advanced than us.” He mentions the Legends Retold team has been working with them for the past year now.
This then segues into talk about how Ubisoft employed some tricks to ensure that Legends Retold would deliver the same quality on Switch 2 as it does on PlayStation 5 Pro. One is obvious: cutting down the resolution in handheld mode. Another is also pretty obvious to anyone familiar with Switch 2’s specific hardware: DLSS is liberally employed. “The DLSS is working quite well, as you can see,” Assandri says. “When it’s docked, it’s full 4K because we don’t have to care about power consumption, so we can go a bit higher.”=
It’s a rather insightful tech talk about how Switch 2 hardware isn’t as much of a barrier as one might expect. While Nintendo’s console is certainly not on par with PS5, it can punch well above its weight thanks to certain tricks up its sleeve. It will be interesting to see if Ubisoft’s hard work pays off when Rayman Legends Retold launches on October 1, 2026.
