The Super Mario Galaxy Movie continues to be a massively successful blockbuster film, so it only stands to reason that Nintendo would want to use it as a jumping off point for future games in the Mario series. While story and character have never been the main focus of Super Mario, there is a specific development within the latest movie that could create a new dynamic between two classic characters.

For the sake of not spoiling things, I’ll say it deals with Peach’s backstory in the film. After years of speculation, the Galaxy Movie confirms a fan theory that has major implications for the future of Peach’s character. I’m very mixed on it, but that’s neither here nor there. In a recent interview with Nintendo Dream Web about the impending Japanese release of the film, Miyamoto stated that he’d like to incorporate this new lore into future Mario games. Spicy.

Spoilers from here on out.

If you’ve seen the Galaxy Movie, then you know that I’m referring to the revelation that Princess Peach and Princess Rosalina are sisters. That has never been stated in any Mario game, though it seems it will now be canon as Miyamoto wants to “adhere as much as possible to the settings created in the movie in future games.” This is what he told NDW during the interview.

“Since we don’t know what kind of game we’ll make next with our characters, having too many predefined character settings would become a constraint,” Miyamoto explains. “I’m fine with being bound by the gameplay mechanics, but I don’t want to be bound by the fact that I’ve created a story. That’s been my reason for not making movies for many years.”

Continuing, Miyamoto said, “So, before making this movie, I hadn’t decided on the character’s background, but now that I’m making the movie, it’s become fun to expand on the character in various ways. Therefore, I would like to adhere as much as possible to the settings created in the movie in future games.”

I guess this could lead to a sequel to Princess Peach Showtime having the sisters embarking on a journey together. It likely won’t happen in the immediate future, but the next Mario game is sure to present interesting opportunities.
