Newly discovered storyboards from the development of 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie have surfaced online, revealing scrapped cameos and an alternative wedding scene that didn’t make the final cut.
The images were uploaded to the online portfolio of Douglas Lovelace, a storyboard animator who worked on the film. The page that hosted the artwork now returns a 404 error, but an archived version is available via the Wayback Machine, which includes the storyboard in its entirety.

Lovelace’s storyboards for the wedding scene, in which Bowser attempts to force Princess Peach to marry him, include cameos of Mario characters that didn’t make it into the film. These include Rawk Hawk from Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, as well as Whomp King from Super Mario 64.
Wart, Mouser, and Birdo were also planned to appear as wedding guests. This troublesome trio did at least end up with bigger roles in the sequel, as they fought Princess Peach in the Galaxy Movie’s casino scene.
There’s also an unused scene where Peach and Toad fake an argument during the ceremony, so that the princess can sneakily grab an Ice Flower to attack Bowser.
“Maybe if the people I led weren’t cowardly little spores, I wouldn’t have to marry him,” Peach says.
“You’re a rotten Peach,” Toad retorts.
After Peach blasts Bowser with ice, the two begin fighting, and Toad takes on a horde of Bowser’s minions in an extended action scene.
