As many parents likely know by now, one of the most popular moments from The Super Mario Bros. Movie was the song “Peaches.” Sung by Bowser during the film, it was a funny little throwaway ditty that was likely never intended to become a cultural phenomenon. Somehow, it topped the Billboard charts in 2023, so going into The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, many expected a follow up. Well, that didn’t happen, but musician Jack Black debuted a new song for the film last night on Fallon anyway.

Featuring lite backup vocals from the cast of the film, this new song recaps the previous movie from Bowser’s point of view and quickly summarizes what’s going on in the Galaxy Movie. Black starts it by singing, “There once was a man named Mario,” and it honestly sounds pretty close to a Tenacious D tune. Black performed it in a Bowser costume on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon yesterday. It’s certainly more thought out than “Peaches,” but it wasn’t included in the new movie for whatever reason.

If I had to guess, it’s probably because Universal and Illumination didn’t want to repeat the same gimmick twice. “Peaches” was reportedly a spur of the moment thing for Black who made it up on the spot, and trying to recapture that energy with every successive film is only going to lead to diminishing returns. Cutting it from the sequel (if that’s what even happened) makes sense when considered like that.
