Just when you thought the world couldn’t get any darker, Logan Paul steps back into the picture to ruin your day. As reported by various outlets yesterday evening, Paul’s rare “Pikachu Illustrator” Pokémon card has sold for a record-breaking $16.5 million at Goldin Auctions after 41 days of bidding. I’m not sure why it took people over a month to decide on a price, but I guess every collector just had to have Paul’s card.

At Goldin Auctions last night was Guinness World Records adjudicator Sarah Casson. During the livestreamed event, she officiated the sale and confirmed it was not just a record setting price for a Pokémon card, but for any trading card ever sold at auction. “Oh my gosh, this is crazy,” Paul said as he placed the card around winner A.J. Scaramucci’s neck. Scaramucci is the son of venture capitalist and former White House communications director Anthony Scaramucci.

For those unfamiliar with the specific card, Paul had worn it at WrestleMania 38 back in 2022 after adding a custom diamond necklace and case to protect the card. The card, itself, isn’t overly special apart from being exceedingly rare. Created as a prize for an illustration contest in Japanese magazine CoroCoro Comic, it’s unclear how many cards were ever printed. On Price Charting, I’m seeing conflicting numbers that range from 60-100. Still, that’s RARE rare, so I can somewhat understand the inflated price.
