If you’ve been wondering how Square Enix has managed to not only have a fast turnaround on a sequel to Final Fantasy VII Remake, but produce ports in a timely manner, it’s all thanks to the technology powering the game. At the time of its original PlayStation 4 release in 2020, Final Fantasy VII Remake was built on Unreal Engine 4 as that was the latest technology that Epic Games had produced. Instead of rocking the boat for the sequels, SE decided to stick with UE4 and will be keeping that up for Remake Part 3.
In an interview with GameSpot, director Naoki Hamaguchi said, “We’ve been using Unreal Engine 4, but we’ve made a lot of modifications to fit our needs. It’s more beneficial to have something we’re already familiar with and have customized to fit our needs.” Since the technology is similar enough and can be modified without learning a new toolset, that makes perfect sense. Unreal Engine 5 might look “better,” but it would also set development back just to learn.

FF VII Remake’s name
As for what that third game will be called, Hamaguchi isn’t giving any hints. He has stated, however, that the name is locked in. “I remember an interview I did at Paris Games Week about how we’d narrowed it down to two [names],” Hamaguchi explains. “It was up to Mr. Nomura to decide which it is. And yes, after returning from Paris Games Week, he did choose one, so I can say the title has been locked.”
When will Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 3 release on Switch 2?
It’s likely the title will follow with the previous two, which features RE in the name. As for when we can expect Rebirth to hit Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series consoles, Hamaguchi has confirmed that the game is running on Nintendo’s device, though testing is being done to stabilize frame rates. I imagine Square Enix wants the game out as soon as possible, though not so soon that it cannibalizes sales of Remake. There’s also the ongoing development of Part 3, which may or may not release this year on PlayStation 5, and is likely the main priority.
