As part of Koei Tecmo’s third quarter financial results presentation, the company has announced that Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment has sold over one million copies worldwide. Having released in November of last year, it seems the lack of anything Zelda related on the Nintendo Switch 2 helped propel the game through an otherwise quiet quarter for video game sales. As you’re likely well aware of, the global economy isn’t doing hot and holiday sales were down in most markets. For this spinoff to perform so well shows strong interest in the Hyrule Warriors brand.
Koei Tecmo doesn’t explicitly state how many copies Age of Imprisonment moved, but it sits in the “Over One Million” category alongside Ninja Gaiden 4, another high-profile game that was a multi-platform title. For a Switch 2 exclusive to do that well is likely news to Nintendo’s ears, especially since it shows that third-parties can be trusted with in-house IP to create quality games.

Now, it remains to be seen if Age of Imprisonment can keep this momentum going into 2026. The previous Hyrule Warriors game, Age of Calamity, became the highest-selling Musou game of all time and sits at around four million copies sold. Dynasty Warriors and its spinoffs might be popular within a niche group, but the games typically don’t breach the wider audience. I suspect Age of Imprisonment will maybe sell another million copies, but I don’t know how far it will go past that.
