In a Q&A session following the release of its Q2 financial results report, Sega executives were asked about the increasing costs of game development and what the company will do to combat the trend. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, you’ll likely have seen that many companies are shifting towards AI in an effort to reduce spending and make things more “efficient” for staffers. Sadly, it seems Sega is all on board with that as the official response from the house of the Blue Blur is that it will incorporate AI in the game development process.
When asked about the scale of game development growing larger and whether Sega would follow suit, the company stated the following:
“Rather than fully following the trend toward the large-scale development, we will also pursue efficiency improvements, such as leveraging AI. However, as AI adoption can face strong resistance in creative areas such as character creation, we will proceed by carefully assess appropriate use cases, such as streamlining development processes.”
There has been tremendous pushback to AI integration from the public, yet companies keep insisting on integrating it into software and hardware. Just last week, Japanese publication Daily Shinko quoted an unnamed developer who stated that their company requires an artist to draw something live during the interview process to be considered. It sounds extreme, but with AI becoming more “efficient,” it’s more difficult to tell what is genuinely human created or not.
This push for AI within Sega doesn’t seem like it will pay off in the long run, but who can really tell? For now, if you happen to encounter any ludicrous bugs or sloppy design while playing something Sega related, you’ll likely know where it came from.
