The controversial company OpenAI has recently released its dedicated video generation app called Sora 2 and, as to be expected, its video feed has become flooded with copyrighted IPs. More than any other company, Nintendo’s franchises seem to be populating the app en masse, and there are already thousands of videos featuring the likes of Mario, Link, and Pikachu. If you’ve ever imagined Pikachu invading the beaches of Normandy during World War 2, Sora 2 has got you covered.
Nintendo Life has a big compilation (a few samples can be found below) of social media posts sharing the videos, but there is one key detail that will likely result in OpenAI getting hit with several lawsuits soon: Sora 2 operates on an opt-out policy. What this means is that companies have to get in contact with OpenAI to prevent their material from appearing in Sora 2’s database. That’s an incredibly underhanded way to try to get around copyright laws, something that OpenAI is currently battling in court on various accounts.
Sora 2 just broke the Internet yesterday.

My favorite new trend in the Sora app is putting Pikachu in every movie.

i got into sora 2 and the only conclusion I can draw is openai is trying to get sued. this is like 99% of what it shows you immediately upon entering the app pic.twitter.com/BkAXqchK2T

If you think for a second that Nintendo would be happy with this, I only need to remind you that Nintendo has already filed lawsuits against AI-generated images of Mario just last year. Nintendo, more than any big video game company, is very litigious, so there is no way OpenAI is getting by without some legal interaction. Only time will tell what happens, but I wouldn’t expect these videos to remain accessible for long.
