Arguably the most important thing for a new console owner to do is make sure they keep their hardware safe. That’s especially true for handhelds, as their ability to be carried around on the go also makes them far more liable to be dropped, damaged, or otherwise harmed. The best way to safeguard against these concerns is to buy a protective case, usually from separate accessory manufacturers. Of course when it comes to these sorts of products, issues can arise that weren’t considered, such as what happened with the Dbrand Killswitch cases.
Dbrand’s Killswitch case operates like a typical phone case would; by simply slipping the console into a soft plastic shell that protects the system from sudden impacts and other such damage. Unfortunately, the mechanisms of the Nintendo Switch 2 led to an unforeseen issue. The Joy-Con 2 controllers have a small air gap between them and the main body of the system when attached, which serves to prevent the controllers from gaining leverage during use. The Killswitch case filled in this gap as part of attaching the case, which led to many reports of the Joy-Cons detaching during regular use.
Killswitch 2 Release Issue without being a weirdo

Despite the myriad of reports, Dbrand themselves didn’t seem especially sympathetic initially. In a Reddit post responding to the various videos floating around, they went on to debunk these claims, asserting that the Joy-Cons would only detach in extremely specific scenarios and that “nobody routinely holds their Switch 2 like this.” This response was not received well, and led to even further backlash before Dbrand put out a second statement apologizing for their initial post.
“As easy as it is to boil our original post down to ‘you’re holding it wrong,’ what we’re sober to now is the point that you should be allowed to hold it however the fuck you want, without detachment occurring. We get it. Please continue dunking on us for the next six to eight months for reincarnating Steve Jobs.”
At the end of said statement, Dbrand went on to propose a couple solutions that they are working on with upcoming products. All Killswitch owners will be eligible for a free replacement once the improved version becomes available, so for those of you out there who might have experienced these issues, keep an eye out for updates via email. Hopefully this new iteration resolves the issue then and there!
