With the Switch 2 Nintendo Direct just a few weeks away, players around the globe are soon going to learn all of the details of Nintendo’s upcoming Switch 2 console. Many are speculating that we’ll see a release not too long after the stream and a recent rumor suggests that might be the case. According to Go Nintendo, which found the information on the typically reliable Famiboards, Nintendo has already shipped approximately 380,000 Switch 2 units to retailers in North America.

User LiC on the Famiboards had done some research into the Vietnamese manufacturer HVBG. According to what they found, HVBG was contacted by Nintendo and produced around 380,000 console units to be shipped out to retailers. These shipments happened in January of 2025 and there have even been shipments of Joy-Con charging grips to the tune of roughly 41,000 units. It seems like Nintendo is looking to build up stock at specific stores before giving an official release date and running into stock problems.

This actually follows a rumor from last November that indicated Nintendo was looking to have a gigantic Switch 2 launch. In the past with pretty much all of its consoles, Nintendo has always suffered low stock at retail. It plagued the Wii for the first three years of the console’s life and the Switch was also hard to find for a year or so after it hit store shelves. While some of that is artificial inflation to drive up demand, Nintendo’s products are also always in hot demand. Instead of releasing yet another device with low inventory, it makes sense that Nintendo is building up stock before opening the floodgates.

Whether or not the specifics of this rumor are true, I do believe the Switch 2 is right around the corner. I don’t see why Nintendo would have a Direct in early April only to hold the console for another half a year. I wouldn’t necessarily expect the same day or week for release, but we could be playing on Nintendo’s latest platform before summer.
