After the rousing success of Sonic the Hedgehog 3 this past Christmas, it looks as if Paramount Pictures is eager to fasttrack another sequel for the Blue Blur. As reported by Variety, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 has already penciled in a March 19th, 2027 release date. As one of the first films announced for that year, thus far, Sonic 4 will be hitting theaters unopposed for an entire weekend.

While no official casting has been revealed yet, it’s safe to assume that Ben Schwartz will return to voice Sonic with Colleen O’Shaughnessey lending her talents to Tails. Idris Elba is also likely to be included as Knuckles, though it’s unclear if Jim Carrey will return for a fourth go as the egg-shaped Dr. Botnik. We also probably won’t see Keanu Reeves as Shadow again, though you can never say never. As for characters exclusive to this fourth outing, I’ll leave speculation for fans who have managed to catch the third outing.

Interestingly, the fourth Sonic movie will be hitting theaters roughly one year after the followup to The Super Mario Bros. Movie. While I don’t believe that Sega has any concerns over competition between the two gaming icons, it would be interesting to see the duo relive their ’90s rivalry on the silver screen. At any rate, that teaser stuck at the end of Sonic 3 will be fully paid off when the fastest thing alive returns to cineplexes across the world.
