This year’s Game Awards ceremony might be little more than a trailer factory, but it has had some pretty big announcements for fans of classic franchises. Capcom brought not only a brief look at a new Onimusha game but also announced that a new Ōkami title was in development. Not only will this “Ōkami Sequel” continue the story of Sun Goddess Amaterasu, but it will be developed by creator Hideki Kamiya’s new studio with the man returning to direct the belated continuation.

This being a far-off project (likely a few years from now), there wasn’t a lick of gameplay to go off of. Geoff Keighley cued up the orchestra and had them play the Ōkami theme as a rather nicely animated teaser played on the big screen. This Ōkami sequel looks to retain the animation style of the first game, though there’s no telling if Ōkami 2 will be open-world or similar in structure to the original (which was pretty much open-world).

A message from Hideki Kamiya

The director of the original Ōkami, Hideki Kamiya, has shared a statement about the upcoming sequel. You can read it below:

To all of you

“Until next time…”

How long has it been since the story was concluded with that? I didn’t think the day would really come, where I’d return to Ōkami and continue the story with my own hands. Even at this very moment, my body is filled with both a cautious surprise that this is not a dream, and a joy that cannot be described in words.

Everyone who has worked so hard to make this project a reality, the friends who believed in me and gathered at CLOVERS Inc., and most importantly, the voices of so many of you who have continued to support Ōkami even after such a long time: all of this has come together to create this miracle, for which I am deeply grateful.

Like a strong rising sun, this project is finally in motion. But it’s still a small bud that is blossoming. We are ready to fill this new Ōkami with many colorful flowers, and to do our best to fulfil the promise of “next time” in the best way.

Everyone please wait with anticipation.
