The umbrella that is Nintendo’s development studios is one that many fans do not often think about. From an assortment of internal departments to first and second party teams known for their work with Nintendo, there’s a lot going on behind the scenes. Of all of Nintendo’s first party studios, Monolith Soft stands out in the eyes of many as one of the very best, especially during the Nintendo Switch’s lifespan. Despite this, for the longest time Nintendo hasn’t wholly owned the company, at least until just this year that is.

The source of this development comes from the company profile page on Monolith Soft’s website. It is now listed that Nintendo holds 100% of the 2,400 shares in the company, up from the previous 96% held between 2011 and earlier this year. Ultimately, this likely won’t have any major impact on the studio’s work; the 4% not owned by Nintendo prior to this were held by the founders of the company and were symbolic more than anything. Even prior to that, Nintendo has held at least 80% of the stake in the company since 2007, so by and large Monolith Soft has been a Nintendo entity for close to two decades.

Considering how much work Monolith Soft has put in over the years, especially during the lifespan of the Nintendo Switch, this closer connection to Nintendo is a welcome sight. From the Xenoblade series and including work on The Legend of Zelda, Splatoon, and even Animal Crossing, the reach of this studio truly feels like it knows no bounds. Here’s to hoping that this closer connection to Nintendo enables Monolith Soft to continue to uphold this legendary status for many years to come!
