According to some new rumors coming from the Famiboards, it appears as if Nintendo is amping up production of the Switch 2 to meet a theoretically gigantic launch. With no official announcement of the Switch’s successor upon us yet, gamers and industry pundits have been left to speculate on what the device will be and it seems that tracking shipment notifications is the best way to do so.
Similar to information about GameCube controllers that was uncovered via ResetEra users, posters on the Famiboards have decoded a secret message that states the Switch 2 will launch with stock around “2.5 times the volume from March 2017.” When the original Switch launched in early 2017, Nintendo created about 2.74 million units worldwide. With some simple math, multiplying that number comes out to 6.85 million and that is for the US market alone.
That number means nothing without context, however, so let’s provide some. The biggest console launch of all-time was the PlayStation 5 back in late 2020. While Sony has never given an official number, it stated that initial sales had surpassed the PS4 from seven years prior. We do know, however, that the PS4 sold 2.1 million units during its first two weeks of sale in late 2013, so the PS5 surpassed that number to some degree. If Nintendo is expecting nearly 7 million units to be sold for launch, then the Switch 2 launch will be astronomically high.
Now, being that this is a rumor, it’s hard to say how much truth there is to this claim. There has been much talk over how Nintendo keeps seemingly pushing the Switch 2 release back and knowing what we know about how difficult it was for many to get a Switch in 2017, maybe this figure is true. Nintendo could be gearing up for an absolutely massive amount of stock to ensure the launch goes smoothly. With 7 million consoles potentially available on day one, practically anyone who wants to get in at ground zero will be able to.
Only time will tell, but if this does pan out, it will easily be the biggest console launch in history.
