The Super Nintendo World-focused Nintendo Direct has officially wrapped up, and Donkey Kong fans have plenty to be excited about! Here’s everything you need to know about the upcoming Donkey Kong Expansion at Super Nintendo World in Japan.
When Does the Donkey Kong Expansion Open at Universal Studios Japan?
Nintendo and Universal Studios have confirmed that the Donkey Kong Expansion at Super Nintendo World will officially open on December 11th, 2024 — just one month away! Note that this launch date is exclusive to the Japanese park; the Epic Universe expansion at Universal Studios Orlando is set to open on May 22nd, 2025.

What Attractions Will Be at the Donkey Kong Expansion at Super Nintendo World?
During the Nintendo Direct, Shigeru Miyamoto took fans on an exclusive tour of the park, showcasing several attractions. First up is an interactive drumming minigame where guests can play to unlock a special encounter with Rambi the Rhino!
Ah!
Next, we were introduced to some of the interactive elements scattered throughout the land. Visitors can tap their Power-Up Bands on select objects to earn points in the Universal Studios app. For those unfamiliar, these Power-Up Bands also function as amiibo!
Following that, we got our first glimpse of the Donkey Kong mascot costume that will be featured in the expansion. Just like the Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Daisy costumes before it, this one is impressively high quality and incredibly detailed!
Finally, we were treated to our first look at the Donkey Kong Minecart Roller Coaster. As guests wait in line, they’ll be welcomed by an animatronic Cranky Kong, who shares stories about the coaster and the adventure that awaits!
As for the coaster itself, details were kept under wraps, however, we did get a glimpse of the minecart-style seats and a sneak peek at a portion of the track. Beyond that, you’ll just have to experience it firsthand for more details.
What Food Will Be Available at the Donkey Kong Expansion at Universal Studios?
During the Nintendo Direct, several new menu items were revealed. Highlights include an ice cream sundae served in a collectible Donkey Kong-themed glass and a unique take on a hot dog, dubbed the “Special Hot Dog.”
