This week in the Nintendo eShop: Contra III blasts its way on the 3DS Virtual Console, PixelJunk Monsters debuts on Nintendo Consoles, and Pikachu seeks friends and adventure in PokéPark Wii for the Wii U Virtual Console.
There’s not much going on this week in the way of deals. If you missed it last week, Super Meat Boy is still being sold at the discounted price of $11.20 for Wii U. Atlus has also given Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Survivor 2: Record Breaker a fiendish price cut, knocking it down to $24.99 for the next 11 days.

PixelJunk Monsters (Double Eleven, $9.99) – If tower defense games are your speed, you owe it to yourself to give this one a try. Originally released back in 2008 on Sony platforms, play as Tikiman the Forest Defender as he prevents hordes of creatures from sweeping through his realm and turning his offspring into monster chow. Supported by a uniquely beautiful hand-drawn art style, it’s unquestionably one of my favorite games in the genre, providing a deeply engaging (and often times challenging) experience that rewards patience, perseverance, and strategic planning.
Chompy Chomp Chomp Party (Utopian World of Sandwiches, $11.99) – If Hungry Hungry Hippos, paint chips, and Pac-Man were tossed into a blender, Chompy Chomp Chomp Party would undoubtedly be the resulting concoction. Best described as a fast paced, frantic multiplayer extravaganza for up to 9 players, the goal of the game is to chase down and devour your opponents in a variety of game modes and arenas.
Sweetest Thing (Joindots, $6.99) – Candy Land is under attack by ants (and delicious puns) in this charmingly sugar-coated puzzler. As the kingdom’s sugar repair engineer, it’s up to you to gather confectionary resources and rebuild the cavity inducing districts of Cupcake State, Chocolate Shire and Jelly City. Consider this one a sweet treat if you’re a fan of casual, strategy-lite gameplay.

PokéPark Wii: Pikachu’s Adventure (Nintendo, $19.99) – Using the Wii Remote, help Pikachu befriend up to 193 different Pokémon and compete in a variety of exciting mini-games to help save PokéPark from certain doom. This game is sure to please both younger audiences and adults alike, especially those looking for a more lighthearted, family-friendly adventure.

Digger Dan DX (Four Horses, $0.99) – Guide Digger Dan and his appropriately named gopher sidekick Kaboom through trap filled caves in search of buried treasure! This graphically enhanced version of its DSiWare counterpart contains all 100 levels from the original game along with added features such as stereoscopic 3D layering, improved audio, and leaderboards. From a gameplay standpoint, think Dig Dug meets the mole tank from the Yoshi’s Island series for a general idea of how this little gem plays out.
3DS Add-on content
Fire Emblem Fates – Heirs of Fate III: The Changing Tide (Nintendo, $1.99) – In this third chapter of a six part series, Shiro’s wounded band must seize an opportunity to overcome insurmountable odds. Remember, you can purchase the entirety of Map Pack 2 at the discounted price of $7.99.
Hyrule Warriors Legends – Master Wind Waker Pack – (Nintendo, $0.99) – The first in a run of four planned DLC packs, this set includes 16 new My Fairy costume pieces, a new map for Adventure Mode and one new adventure battle scenario. Also for download is the playable character Medli from The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, completely free of charge! Remember, if you’re ready to commit to all future DLC, you can purchase the Legends of Hyrule Season Pass at the discounted price of $14.99 ($19.99 for both 3DS and Wii U).
3DS Virtual Console
Contra III: The Alien Wars (Konami, $7.99) – It’s the year 2636 and the Alien Wars rage on. Earth’s last hope rests on the shoulders of two soldiers, Bill Rizer and Lance Bean, as they run and gun through six action-packed stages in a mission to defeat the alien menace once and for all. The game’s dystopian setting, adrenaline fueled soundtrack, and tight controls perfectly blend together to secure its position as one of the best 2D action platformers ever released on the SNES. It’s just a shame that this version doesn’t support local multiplayer, as cooperatively mowing down alien scum with machine guns and flamethrowers is far more gratifying with a buddy by your side.
