Masahiro Sakurai’s YouTube channel (where he explains various concepts and minutiae of developing and understanding games) is already popping off, with over 700,000 subs and hundreds of thousands of views per video. And the high-quality, laconic style, easily accessible to onlookers, has already found a place among more established institutions — namely, the classroom.

The artist Jokario, aka Adri, was in game dev class when she and everybody else was shown Sakurai’s video on shading trees, “Draw the Light, Not the Asset.” Keep in mind the full class was two hours and 45 minutes long, so it wasn’t being used as a substitute or even in-depth material — more as a basic primer to introduce the subject. And honestly, that seems like perfect usage of Sakurai’s videos: bite-sized introductions to subjects that a teacher can then expound upon as needed.
This is really neat, and we can imagine we’ll see others of Sakurai’s videos in game dev classes in the future. You can check out his channel yourself for more vids.
