One of the surprise announcements from today’s Nintendo Direct was of a brand new Paper Mario title for Wii U, subtitled Color Splash.

Focusing on a brand new arts-and-crafts theme, Color Splash introduces paint mechanics to Paper Mario’s world. Players will run around the Prism Island paradise, filling in drab spaces with vibrant colors. By doing this you uncover secrets, help Toads and solve puzzles.

It also looks like Paper Mario will be joined by a new companion, who takes the form of a floating paint bucket. Familiar enemies also make an appearance, including Koopa Troopas and Shy Guys. Some of the latter even have straws they use to suck up color from their surroundings.

Unfortunately for some, the game looks to be taking more than a few cues from Sticker Star, such as a world map and a selection of battle cards that seem to act similarly to that game’s stickers.

Prism Island at least seems more creative than Sticker Star’s setting, taking a desaturated direction with buildings and areas reminiscent of Colonial America.

Paper Mario: Color Splash will be releasing sometime this year. Be sure to keep checking back for further news on Paper Mario’s next adventure!
