Brian David Gilbert — also known as BDG — has blown up in popularity over the past couple years with the advent of his Polygon video series Unraveled, where he dissects video game issues ranging from the Zelda timeline, to which Castlevania monster is hottest, to how to tell Fire Emblem characters apart. And now he’s back with his latest video, which asks a very simple question: what is Kirby?
In usual BDG style he takes the quaint question and takes it to logical (and illogical) extremes, establishing an immediate contrast between Kirby’s childlike simplicity and absurd levels of power as he gradually grows mad trying to understand the essence of everybody’s favorite pink puffball. The final result is somehow somber, with a light touch of philosophy to complement the experience. Any more description disservices the video itself, which is absolutely worth your time.
