When it comes to weird interpretations of Mario nothing can quite top the Super Mario Bros. movie of the early ’90s. With its humanoid Goombas, Blade Runner architecture and a realistic raptor called Yoshi, it couldn’t be more different from the Mushroom Kingdom established in the games.

Despite all of this, or perhaps because of it, the movie is still something of a cult classic. As a result it is seeing another release next year on Blu-Ray, complete with a steelbook edition. Take a look:

This version will include a 60 minute documentary with input from producer Roland Joffe, co-directors Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel, and actors John Leguizamo (Luigi) and Richard Edson (Spike). Archived interviews with Bob Hoskins and producer Jake Eberts are included as well, alongside storyboards and behind-the-scenes features.

As of right now it’s only available to pre-order via UK retailer Zavvi, but it’ll surely pop up elsewhere soon enough.

Whether it’s an exciting new entry in a series long established or a weird experiment meant only for the dedicated, Tom is eager to report on it. Rest assured, if Nintendo ever announces Elite Beat Agents 2, he’ll be there.
