Super Mario Maker is an incredible game that feels somehow anti-Nintendo. Released on the Wii U in 2015, I’m still shocked that the Big N gave players most of the tools they needed to create their dream Super Mario levels. The Switch sequel takes things further, but what if Nintendo were to extend that same option to 3D Mario? There is still a possibility it will happen, but in the meantime, we have the rather incredible mod for Super Mario 64 titled “Mario Builder 64.”

Created by rovertronic and Arthurtilly, this latest creation does exactly what its title promises: lets you build Super Mario 64 levels. While it’s not as polished as an official Nintendo release, it’s still an amazing tool that allows players to tinker with Super Mario 64’s tools to create their dream 3D creations. In an incredible touch, this will even work on real N64 hardware (though particularly massive levels will likely incur slowdown).

The short trailer shows off the kind of mayhem that is possible in Mario Builder 64 and it’s certainly robust. Not only do you have control over the placement of items in all three axes, but you can easily share levels with friends across the internet. Since the modding scene for Super Mario 64 is well established at this point, you can even include custom textures and music into your levels. It’s a veritable cornucopia of Super Mario 64 goodness.

Mario Builder 64 is now available to download at ROMHACKING.com. The steps to set it up are available from the download page.
