The release of Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past is just a few weeks away, and in case you weren’t already aware of how many hours you can sink into the upcoming 3DS adventure Nintendo has released a new trailer showcasing one of the game’s more open-ended areas – the Haven. Check it out:

The Haven is just one of many different islands you’ll discover throughout your main adventure in Dragon Quest VII, but what makes it stand out is that it’s almost completely barren at first, except for one inhabitant. It turns out you can populate the island with reformed monsters you find around the rest of the world, with one example being a wistful former Slime who talks in nothing but goo’d puns.

By getting these monsters to move into the Haven you’ll not only receive a Traveler’s Tablet, a unique item that unlocks a special dungeon featuring the monster you recruited, but also over time the town will expand with new buildings, including churches and casinos. One of the most notable of these buildings is the Download Bar, which is where you’ll be able to download the game’s free DLC, so it’s definitely worth building up the Haven.

Dragon Quest VII: Fragments of the Forgotten Past releases in North America and Europe on September 16! Nintendo is sure to ramp up advertisements for the game in the weeks to come, so be sure to stay tuned to learn more.

Whether it’s an exciting new entry in a series long established or a weird experiment meant only for the dedicated, Tom is eager to report on it. Rest assured, if Nintendo ever announces Elite Beat Agents 2, he’ll be there.
